How Glycemic Load Is Calculated

Glycemic load improves on the glycemic index by multiplying the quality of the carbs (GI) by the quantity of carbs actually consumed. The formula is simple: GL = GI × available carbohydrate per serving in grams / 100. Available carbohydrate usually means total carbohydrate minus fiber. Most juices contain essentially no fiber, so the label's total carbohydrate value is close to the available carbohydrate. The serving-size element is important: a 240 ml glass of orange juice and a 500 ml bottle may have the same GI, but the larger bottle delivers more than twice the carbs and roughly twice the glycemic load. Worked Examples

Orange juice, 240 ml: GI 50, carbs 10 g per 100 ml. Total carbs = 10 × 240 ÷ 100 = 24 g. GL = 50 × 24 ÷ 100 = 12, which is medium.

Grape juice, 350 ml: GI 59, carbs 16 g per 100 ml. Total carbs = 16 × 350 ÷ 100 = 56 g. GL = 59 × 56 ÷ 100 = 33, which is high.

Tomato juice, 200 ml: GI 38, carbs 4 g per 100 ml. Total carbs = 4 × 200 ÷ 100 = 8 g. GL = 38 × 8 ÷ 100 = 3, which is low.

Limitations & Accuracy Notes

Glycemic index values for juices are averages; actual values can shift by 10–20 points depending on fruit variety, ripeness, processing, filtration, and added sugar or acids. Juice blends are especially unpredictable because the GI of the mix is not the simple average of its ingredients. The tool assumes your carb entry is available carbohydrate, but if the label includes added fiber or sugar alcohols, the true glycemic response could be slightly different. Also, glycemic load is a population-based estimate, not a guaranteed measure of your individual glucose curve. Post-meal blood sugar depends on your insulin sensitivity, meal composition, protein and fat eaten alongside, gut bacteria, and digestion rate. Frequently Asked Questions

Is GI or GL more useful for juice?

GL is usually more useful for a drink because serving size is so variable. A small glass of high-GI juice can have a low GL; a large glass of moderate-GI juice can have a high GL. GL accounts for both the speed and the dose.

Should I use total carbs or sugar?

Use total carbohydrate, not sugar. The GI already reflects how quickly the carbohydrates in that juice are absorbed. Label sugar is a subset of total carbs, and using only sugar would undercount the carbs that affect blood glucose.

Can this calculator handle juice blends?

It can, as long as you enter a reasonable GI estimate and the actual carbs from the label. If the blend lists no GI, choose the closest single juice, check the manufacturer's glycemic index claim, or use a conservative value around 50.
