How to Use This Tool

This calculator takes the nutrition information already printed on your drink label and converts it into a standard per-100g value. Follow these steps:

  1. Select a drink from the dropdown to auto-fill typical values, or leave it on “Custom drink”.
  2. Enter the total carbs per serving in grams and the serving size in millilitres from the nutrition panel.

How the Calculation Works

Nutrition labels for beverages usually report carbohydrates either per serving or per 100 ml. Since almost all still drinks have a density very close to 1 g per ml, a per-100ml value is effectively the same as a per-100g value. The calculation uses two simple formulas:

Carbs per 100 g = (total carbs in serving ÷ serving size in ml) × 100

Total carbs in your drink = (carbs per 100 g ÷ 100) × amount you drank

For example, a 240 ml orange juice with 23 g of carbs gives 23 ÷ 240 × 100 = 9.6 g per 100 g. If you pour 300 ml, that is 9.6 ÷ 100 × 300 = 28.8 g of carbs.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Cola
A 330 ml can of regular cola lists 35 g of carbs for the whole can. Per 100 g: 35 ÷ 330 × 100 = 10.6 g. If you drink the whole can, you get all 35 g. Against a 275 g daily target, that’s 35 ÷ 275 × 100 = 12.7% of your carbs before you’ve eaten anything.

Example 2: Wine
A 150 ml glass of red wine contains about 3.9 g of carbs. Per 100 g: 3.9 ÷ 150 × 100 = 2.6 g. If you have a 250 ml pour, total carbs = 2.6 ÷ 100 × 250 = 6.5 g — much lower than the cola, although alcohol calories still matter.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Check the serving size. Many bottles look like one serving but actually contain 2–3 servings. Multiply the label carbs by the number of servings you drink.
  • Use per-100g for quick comparisons. A drink with 9 g per 100g pours about 33% more carbs into the same glass than one with 6.8 g per 100g.
  • Watch portion size. The per-100g number is a concentration; your total carb load still depends on how much you pour. A low-per-100g drink in a giant cup can deliver more carbs than a small glass of a higher-carb drink.
  • For alcohol, count carbs but not only carbs. Alcohol itself is not a carb, but beer and sweet wines often contain maltose and residual sugar. Cocktails with juice or syrup can be carb-heavy.

Factors Affecting Accuracy

This tool gives a strong estimate, but a few factors can cause small differences between the calculated number and your actual carb intake:

  • Density: The 1 ml ≈ 1 g assumption is excellent for water, coffee, tea, and most soft drinks. Sugar-heavy syrups or creamy smoothies can be slightly denser, which means the true carbs per gram may be a little lower than the per-ml value.
  • Label rounding: Manufacturers often round carbohydrate values to the nearest whole gram. For a small serving, rounding can shift the per-100g result by 0.5–1 g.
  • Ice and temperature: Ice adds water volume but no carbs, so a drink with lots of melting ice will have a more dilute carb concentration than the label suggests.
